Abstract

Uterine fibroids or leiomyomas are the most common benign neoplasms of the female genital tract. Fibroids can cause an array of symptoms including menorrhagia, abdominal or pelvic pain, pregnancy complications and even infertility. The da Vinci surgical system is currently the only robotic system used in surgery. The most common are abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, changes in urinary habits and fibroids causing subfertility or pregnancy loss. A thorough and detailed preoperative planning is recommended before the patient is scheduled for a robotic myomectomy. It includes a medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging. The medical history should include details of the menstrual cycle, history of pelvic or abdominal pain, changes in urinary or bowel habits, previous surgeries and any pertinent medical condition especially coagulopathies. The physical examination consists of a bimanual exam to directly palpate the fibroids. A complete blood count and a pregnancy test are also recommended.
