Abstract

Background: The best treatment for patients with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis is liver transplantation, which eliminates the disease and the underlying carcinogenic parenchyma. However, the severe shortage in donor liver organs precludes this option for all but the sickest patients per MELD score. Robotic resection can offer a safe, effective oncologic cure, with less morbidity than an open operation, while preventing scar tissue that can diminish future liver transplantation success.
