Abstract

Robert Whytt's contributions to the field of eating disorders have fallen into obscurity since his death in 1766. In his text, Observations on the Nature, Causes, and Cure of those Disorders which have been Commonly called Nervous, Hypochondriac or Hysteric to which are prefixed some Remarks on the Sympathy of the Nerves, Whytt made seminal comments about both anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This essay contains a biographical sketch, quotations from his publication, and a commentary.
