Abstract

The author discusses the journal entries made by Robert Giard during his 6-year project that found him crisscrossing the United States to photograph women, ages 54 to their early 90s, who were recipients of grants from The Thanks Be To Grandmother Winifred Foundation. The essay showcases Giard’s portraits of 241 extremely diverse older women and their extremely diverse women-centered projects. It weaves his words, thoughts, and images with the author’s responses as a writer, feminist, and longtime friend and admirer of his work.
