Abstract

JEAN-MICHEL CHAPOULIE Robert E. Park, the Chicago tradition and the study of race relations The article proposes a synthetic presentation of the conceptual framework of Robert Park’s sociology of race relations, by restoring it to the historical context of the time of its elaboration. Il also examines the use of this framework by two of his students, Franklin Frazier and Everett Hughes. They both retained the principal elements of a framework which focussed attention on aspects whose pertinence has been underlined by later developments. The hypothesis of the cycle of race relations, under which banner academic stereotyping often categorizes Park’s sociology, appears, on the contrary, as a minor aspect of his work.
