Abstract

A total of 320 loadbearing and nonloadbearing wall panels were used effectively to enclose the new Roanoke City jail, The four-story facility (plus mechanical equipment story) has a building area of 93,480 sq ft (8694 m 2). The contract was awarded to the low bidder for $5.8 million. A total of seven bids were received, the highest being $6.5 million. Architectural precast concrete components on this new jail facility provided functional solutions to unique structural and security problems. The integration of precast loadbearing architectural sandwich panels with the cast-in-place structure creates a monolithic appearance. The hard, durable interior finish has the appearance of monolithic cast-in-place concrete, and the lightly sandblasted exterior finish is an architectural design feature. Precast sandwich panels provided an insulated wall with a minimum number of components and therefore effected a significant savings in labor at the job site. The building consists of four pods containing prisoner cells and a central core
