Abstract

Lay Summary Although roads are one of the major threats for moving animals, urban red squirrels do not avoid roads during dispersal. Yet, they are seldom killed by traffic. During routine movements inside their home range, however, squirrels were located further from roads and crossed them less frequently. Our study shows that the evaluation of the role of roads as barriers for gene flow cannot be based on the interpretation of movements of nondispersers only.
