Abstract

Road transportation has become, or is becoming, the dominant mode for personal travel and freight in most parts of the world. A combination of innovations in vehicle technologies, public investment in road infrastructure, and increasing incomes has led to its rise. Its critical advantage over other forms of transportation its ability to make point‐to‐point connections for a very large number of origins and destinations. The shift to road transportation has had a profound effect on urban form and other settlement patterns. Road transportation is more energy‐intensive than alternative modes and generates negative environmental impacts. Road transportation is growing rapidly in cities of the developing world, leading to urban environmental problems and rising global greenhouse gas emissions.
