Abstract
The South Korean city of Busan will be the venue for the 10th assembly of the World Council of Churches in 2013. Busan is thought of as the land of Buddhism and the shelter for refugees during the Korean War. Many famous Buddhist temples in Korea are located in the Busan area and Busan was the only place that was not captured by the Communists during the Korean War. Many refugees fled to Busan to find a safe shelter. Busan is also called a symbolic place of the Presbyterian schisms. A major schism mainly took place in Busan right after the Korean War. This schism is related to the Shinto Shrine worship forced by Japanese imperialists. Another serious schism was in 1959, which took place when the Presbyterian churches divided into two denominations due to the issue of participating in the WCC. In short, the 10th WCC Assembly will take place in a land marked by Buddhism and Christian schism. The purpose of this paper is to examine the historical significance of the 10th WCC Assembly in Busan, from the perspective of a Korean Christian living in Busan, to find a way of successful assembly.
