Abstract

An investigation has been made on field performance, especially on road antiknock quality, of six LP gases by using a Japanese passenger car and two carburetor/vaporizer systems. The results obtained were as follows:1. Acceleration and fuel consumption of a car tested were mainly affected by the mixture strength and a little by the chemical composition of LP gases and the difference of basic spark advance.2. Road octane number of propane is considerably high but butane, the main constituent of LP gas for motor fuel in Japan, is fairly low in the low and middle engine speed range. The road antiknock quality of Japanese motor LP gas is equal to or a little lower than that of the premium gasoline on the market.3. The severity of an LP gas engine tested did not equal or exceed that of the Motor method engine in the all engine speed studied. It fell between the Research method and the Motor method as is the case with motor gasoline. This fact is quite different from that in previous studies using US passenger cars.
