Abstract

On the National Highways of Australia there has been a marked increase in the number of people seriously injured in road accidents happening in remote country areas. The author practises 50 miles from a hospital and he joins with a rescue team attending accidents on a dangerous stretch of the N1 highway. Injuries treated over a 7-year period are analysed, and methods of emergency care and the equipment needed are detailed. Practical measures to be followed by rescue parties in similar situations are suggested, and a national rescue organization for the future is discussed.
