Abstract

A survey of road accidents in Hungary shows a steep decline in accidents that caused personal injury from 1990 to 2000. The fleet rose by 18%, but the number of accidents fell by 37% and fatalities decreased by more than half. But there is much room for improvement in the severity of accidents and the number of fatalities they cause. Among the steps recommended are steps to increase the use of seatbelts, which is below 50% in front seat occupants in 2000, and more education and enforcement of speed limits among younger drivers, who are involved in and suffer injuries and fatalities from road accidents in disproportionately large numbers.
