Abstract

In 2018, the number of female dental students surpassed males, 51% to 49%. This tiny tip of the scales is symbolically huge in our historically male-dominated profession. Although women now account for over half of dental trainees, there remains a large disparity in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) residents, with women only accounting for 12% of graduates in 2019.1 Various theories about this sharp drop-off exist, however a lack of mentorship is a major barrier. A survey of attendees of the 2019 Women in OMS Symposium, a large portion of whom were dental students, found that 46% lacked a mentor, and that lack of mentorship was one of the largest perceived impediments to women's pursuit of a career in OMS.
