Abstract

Summary. — The Roman conquest had very few immediate consequences for the coinages in this region: few were interrupted and most retained their earlier forms. Minting was still organised around the regional mint of Antioch for silver as well as for bronze coins, which show Roman influence (bronze SC) well before the issues of antoniniani. Inscriptions in Greek go back to a rich Hellenistic tradition before the development of Latin usage, especially in the case of the coins of colonies, in accordance with the types used. One also still finds traces and sometimes resurgences of even earlier traditions (Phoenician, Aramean). Various types on the obverse such as portraits, as well as those on the reverse, where in the second century extravagant architectural or cult representations were developped, reveal Roman influences as well as local traditions.
