Abstract

The adrenal glands contain two functionality different tissues: adrenocortical (cortex) and adrenomedullary (medulla) systems. Each of these tissues may be involved in a benign or malignant neoplastic process. Several approaches may help for tumor tissue characterization. 18F-FDG PET/CT has been evaluated for the diagnosis of non-secreting adrenal masses, in the staging and follow-up of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) patients and in the work-up of hereditary pheochromocytomas. This review article aims to guide clinicians towards the appropriate use of 18F-FDG PET in relation to the clinical context and to assist nuclear medicine practitioners in interpreting the results.
