Abstract

The paper deals with the changes in river regimes of the Khabour River and its tributaries in the Upper Jazirah region, most important Syrian cotton and wheat production area. The comparison of the mean monthly runoff distrubutions, coefficients of variation and asymmetry, distribution ofmaximums and sesonal distributions in the periods 1961-1981 and 1981-2000 showed significant changes. Beside significant lowering of mean monthly runoffs all year round, there are changes in the natural river regime, primarily in much lesser runoffs during the vegetation period. It is a consequence of an intense growth in agricultural water usage, mainly the use of ground-water, which lead to higher variability of runoffs.
