Abstract

Abstract Rituals may recall us to other times and other places, or even to some totally other time (in illo tempore), but they take place in real time and space, with physical bodies and within flesh-and-blood communities, using human words and actions and symbols, drawing often on the ingredients of material culture, appealing to all the senses from smell to sound, and setting material bodies in motion through a vocabulary of gesture, movement, and dance.
