Abstract
In this paper we will study the use by D.H. Lawrence of the mythical structure of the initiation rite and of the hero’s adventure in Lady Chatterley’s Lover in close relation to the author’s ideology as well as to the moralizing function of the novel. After describing D.H.Lawrence’s ideology with respect to the relation between intellect and body, which he explains in "A Propos of Lady Chatterley’s Lover" and "Pornography and Obscenity", it will follow the study of the novel’s structure to see how it parallels the structure of the hero’s mythical adventure and of the initiation rite in its three stages, according to the schema proposed by Campbell (1973), Villegas (1978) and Eliade (1984;1989): non-initiated life, initiation stage, and post-initiated life. Finally, we will consider the adequacy of this structure to the moralizing function of this controversial novel.
