Abstract
Blood volume expansion is the main treatment of hypovolemia, but may induce adverse effects. The risks of adverse effects are all the more high since the pre-load reserve of the patient is low. Adverse effects may be linked to the specific effects of the infused solutions, or directly induced by fluid loading. These latter complications may be due to the increase in hydrostatic pressure, an interstitial or a cellular edema, an induced hypothermia, or metabolic disturbances.
