Abstract

Despite the availability of sophisticated statistical risk models, managing risk requires more than mathematical wizardry. One must go beyond the models to fully grasp the essential aims of risk management and understand its limitations. This article traces the historical development of risk management from the 1950s forward. In this way, we will gain a full appreciation for where we are in the story and for where risk management is headed in the future.
