Abstract

The risk of transmission of infection from gastrointestinal endoscopy is very low. Endoscopes and some endoscopic accessories are reprocessed prior to subsequent use. Multisociety guidelines detail the appropriate steps for reprocessing of equipment used for endoscopy. Strict adherence to such reprocessing guidelines is crucial to prevention of transmission of infection; indeed, all cases of pathogen transmission related to endoscopy since the advent of guidelines have been the result of a breach in following accepted reprocessing protocols.
