Abstract

As ever, I've enjoyed my annual holiday in the United States—but not quite as much as in earlier years. I noticed that many drivers were using their mobile phones (known as cellphones in the US). This has been illegal back home since 2007. One still very occasionally sees British drivers risking the £60 spot fine and 3 penalty points, but in the States, drivers are customarily seen talking or texting on their cells. So are American drivers simply better at multitasking? Not according to people who work in the relevant medical fields. David E. Meyer, for instance, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, was recently quoted in The New York Times (Richtel, 2009a):
