Abstract
To ensure the safety and efficiency of vessel traffic VTS operators collect and analyse traffic and environment data in a shore based YTS centre. If a traffic situation deviates from safe state they have to send messages to certain vessels in order to reach back this state. Although clear criteria and limit values for collision avoidance are still missing VTS operators work safe and reliable. Within this paper some results gained during experimental trails and regarding the operators' intuitive situation assessment and the limit values they use to interact on situations with danger of collision will be presented.
