Abstract

Ann Neurol. 2012; 72 (12): 850– 858; doi: 10.1002/ana.23688[OpenUrl][1][CrossRef][2][PubMed][3] Investigators at multiple institutions performed a case-control study in order to determine whether recent exposure to trauma or infection were risk factors for the development of arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). The study population included 2.5 million children aged <20 years who were members of Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program (KPMCP) in Northern California from 1993 to 2007. Cases of AIS were identified from electronic records and confirmed by chart review by 2 neurologists using pre-established clinical and radiologic criteria. Cases were matched to 3 randomly selected controls by age, year of enrollment into KPMCP, and primary care facility.
