Abstract

It is interesting to know if there is a threshold for growth hormone (GH) serum level above which GH increases insulin resistance and bellow which the inhibitory agents used in acromegaly like somatostatin analogs (octreotid) do not produce diabetes mellitus through their well-known insulin lowering actions. This threshold for GH serum levels, calculated by us to be 2 μg/L (6 mU/L) (1), could be a useful indicator for radical therapies efficacy in acromegaly due to GH secreting pituitary tumors. However, this cut-off level has a low specificity but GH levels over 8.3 mg/L predict insulin resistance with over 74% specificity.
