Abstract

The profile of 65 hospitalized children with community-acquired urinary tract infection (UTI) was analyzed to identify the risk factors associated with UTI caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers. Of the 58 subjects with gram-negative organisms, 64.4% were ESBL producers. There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical characteristics of those with UTI caused by ESBL producers and non-ESBL producers. No specific risk factors for infection with ESBL producers were identified in individuals with UTI; the possibility of infection with an ESBL-producing organism must therefore be considered in all cases of UTI, and antibiotic prescribing policies reviewed accordingly.
