Abstract

311 Purpose Identify and compare injured and uninjured skiers(Sks) and snowboarders (Sbs) in Southern Alberta under the age of 18, in order to determine modifiable risk factors. Design and Setting A case-control study identified injured (cases) and uninjured (control) Sks and Sbs in South Alberta (1996-97) MethodsCases were identified through those events reported to the Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA) ski patrol. Injury definition: 1. Any injury resulting from a traumatic event assessed by ski patrol or; 2. An injury which occurred at a lift line; 3. Under the age of 18 at the time of injury. Controls: Uninjured Sks and Sbs under the age of 18,identified during two site visits to each of the 7 ski areas. Results 1390 injury events resulted in 1635 separate injuries. 820 controls were obtained. Head and knee injuries predominated in skiers with wrist and head in snowboarders. Male Sbs had a higher odds ratio of injury compared to male Sks (OR = 2.11). Beginners had higher risk of injuries in both Sks and Sbs. Lessons had no protective effect. Conclusions This study documented the types of injuries and characteristics of Sks and Sbs under 18 years old. Protective equipment needs to be evaluated in future studies.
