Abstract

Group A streptococcus bacteria can cause skin and respiratory infections, as well as scarlet fever and invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections. Outbreaks of group A streptococcal infections (group A strep) and scarlet fever in England usually follow a seasonal pattern, with most scarlet fever cases typically occurring from the beginning of February–April each year. However, data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Dec 15, 2022, show that there has been an out-of-season increase in both scarlet fever and group A strep infections, rising from September, 2022.
