Abstract
The role that crime, policing and disadvantage play in generating outbreaks of social disorder is discussed by focusing on the riots that occurred in Macquarie Fields in 2005 and in Redfern in 2004. It is found that there is no easy formulaic solution to this kind of problem but using three commonsense guidelines helps in reducing the risk of police-citizen confrontation. These guidelines are: treating the residents of crime-prone neighbourhoods with civility and respect, a determination to respond promptly and courteously to calls for police assistance, and engaging the community wherever possible in the solution of specific problems.
