Abstract
Riot grrrl is a feminist movement that emerged from the punk/indie rock subcultures of Olympia, Washington and Washington, DC in the early 1990s. The youth‐based movement revolved around DIY (do‐it‐yourself) politics, music, and zines (homemade, photocopied magazines about music and politics). The term “riot grrrl” was first used in 1991; by 1993 dozens of riot grrrl chapters had sprung up across the country, but riot grrrl as a movement in the United States was considered “dead” by the mid‐1990s. Original riot grrrl bands include Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, and the United Kingdom's Huggy Bear.
