Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive update of the synthetic methods for preparation, reactivity and transformations of seven-membered and larger heterocyclic rings containing a single atom or combination of atoms such as Si, Ge, Sn and Pb. Heterocycles are divided into parent rings, rings containing E–(CH2)–E, E–CC–E, C–E–O or O–E–O units, silacrown ethers, calixarenes, cyclophanes, metallacenes and atranes. Insertion reactions into Si–Si and Ge–Ge bonds are also discussed. A separate section is devoted to application of computational methods for structure elucidation, investigation of reaction mechanisms and interpretation of spectroscopic data.
