Abstract

The removal of rings from swollen fingers is an important part of the management of extremity injuries. Most can be cut using a standard ring cutter, but as noted in the article “A Method For the Removal of Tungsten Carbide Rings” by Allen et al., there are some rings that are not easily cut by the standard ring cutter ( 1 Allen K.A. Rizzo M. Sadosty A.T. A method for the removal of tungsten carbide rings. J Emerg Med. 2012; 43: 93-96 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (8) Google Scholar ). The ring may be harder than the ring cutter, or the heat generated by the cutter may be damaging to the finger. In addition, some patients may request that a ring not be cut for sentimental reasons. A Method for the Removal of Tungsten Carbide RingsJournal of Emergency MedicineVol. 43Issue 1PreviewThe removal of metal rings from fingers is a well-described process that often employs a toothed cutting wheel or bolt cutters to sever the ring and allow it to be pried open. However, tungsten carbide (TC) rings are impervious to these traditional ring-cutting devices. Full-Text PDF
