Abstract

The principles of ring imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors are given. The prototype of a 50 × 50 cm 2 RICH for the NA35 experiment at CERN is described. It consists of a radiator vessel coupled through quartz windows to a multistep avalanche chamber, filled with a gas mixture containing TMAE (photosensitive compound), allowing UV photon detection. Some preliminary results of testing are given.
