Abstract

The RI Beam Factory has been proposed at RIKEN, and the construction in its first phase will start in 1999. The aim of the project is to provide intense RI (radioisotopes) beams at energies of several hundred MeV/nucleon in a quite wide range of atomic masses. These beams will be produced by the projectile fragmentation of primary beams accelerated by a cascade of the existing ring cyclotron and two new ring cyclotrons. The second phase is to construct a complex of storage rings, which accelerate the RI beams up to I GeV/nucleon and storage them for various types of colliding experiments.
