Abstract

A new factorization theorem for the decay rates of P‐wave charmonium states is presented. Infrared divergences encountered in previous perturbative calculations of P‐wave decays are avoided by taking into account the annihilation of the charmed quark and antiquark in a color‐octet S‐wave state. Using recent precision measurements of the total width of the χc1 and χc2 states as inputs, we predict all the remaining light‐hadronic and electromagnetic decay rates of the P‐wave charmonium states.
