Abstract A description is provided for Rigidoporus ulmarius . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: On Ulmus . Also reported on Acer, Aesculus, Populus, Robinia and Tilia . DISEASE: Elm butt rot. Forming a conical column of decayed wood in the lower part of the host stem, which becomes dark brown and friable, splitting into brick-shaped fragments with no mycelial sheets within the cracks. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Asia (India, Japan, U.S.S.R.); Europe (Cyprus, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal); North America (Mexico); Central America (British Honduras). TRANSMISSION: By air-borne spores.
