Abstract

The recently proposed smooth (or rigid) string model is compared to QCD at intermediate energies with the help of a sum rule-like technique. A clear agreement between the two is obtained for an inverse rigidity constant α(2 GeV)<0.2. The presence of a Lüscher term in the static potential with the universal coefficient − π/12 is required by QCD. As a by-product we also get a new estimate of the string tension √ σ=0.45±0.5 GeV.
