Abstract

The article reconstructs right-wing populist political trends that have affected both political discourses and politics in the Second Austrian Republic. The rise of Jörg Haider and corresponding populist political developments in the second half of the 1980s are taken as starting point. Historic as well as recent trends are discussed. Special attention is given to relevant deployments under the coalition governments between the Austrian People's Party and the Freedom Party of Austria (2017–2019), on the one hand, and between the Austrian Peoples's Party and The Greens (incumbent since 2020), on the other. While the "right-wing populist turn" in Austrian mainstream politics is closely connected to the former federal chancellor Sebastian Kurz, the deep fall of this politician does by no means indicate that such trend has been stopped yet.
