Abstract

This chapter traces the history of developments in the quest for the promotion and protection of women's human rights in Africa. It also addresses some of the most pervasive challenges which continue to exist and which negatively impact the realisation of women's rights. The ACHPR contains two specific references to women. Article 2 includes sex in a broad non-discrimination clause, and Article 18(3) requires states to eliminate 'every discrimination against women and also ensure the protection of the rights of the woman and the child as stipulated in international declarations and conventions. Both the 1995 African Plan of Action on Women and the Addis Ababa Declaration on the Dakar African Platform for Action for Women recognized the need to mobilize political will and commitment to address the inadequate protection afforded to women in the ACHPR and to promote the active participation of women in decision-making positions.
