Abstract

reviewer should be at liberty to offer assessment about values (McCanse 1963:4) but they should not be allowed to dominate entire review. McCanse, although addressing himself to topic of literary review, offers some sound advice, reviewer may properly develop his controlling or basic assessment by using.. .some of methods referred to above. To be avoided, however, are tiresome excursions into his own personal philosophy and into obvious moralizing, preachment and partisanship (McCanse 1963:17). In Man in Prehistory Chard has attempted to synthesize world prehistory into a readable and comprehensible account. The book is result of teaching experience gained in an introductory prehistory course and is intended to realize some of expectations of students in this type of class. These expectations are the relevance of prehistoric human experience to an understanding of cultural processes, human behavior, and human evolution (Chard 1969:v). In my opinion author has been admirably successful in realizing his expressed aims. The book is well suited for introductory classes in prehistory. Its most serious defects are rather monotonous format and serious lack of sufficient illustrative material. The limited number of illustrations and maps provided are excellent.
