Abstract

Introduction: Right Intrapericardial pneumonectomy is a major thoracic surgical procedure for locally advanced lung cancer resection. It has a 12% mortality. Aim: To assess intrapericardial right pneumonectomy with pericardial reconstruction and prolene mesh in terms of clinical outcomes Materials and methods: Retrospective study of all pneumonectomy cases performed in our Department over the last 10 years. Thorough review of medical records and local registry followed. Results: Between 2011-2021, 30 patients (mean age 62 years) underwent a pneumonectomy of which 7 had an intrapericardial pneumonectomy which included pericardial reconstruction with prolene mesh. None of the 7 patients had a mediastinal deviation to the right or any atrial/ventricular hernia. 90day mortality was 0, mean hospital stay was 6 days and mean surgical duration was 135 mins. No thromboembolic events were recorded. Conclusions: Right intrapericardial pneumonectomy with pericardial reconstruction with prolene mesh is a safe procedure in carefully selected patients with satisfying clinical outcomes.
