Abstract

Cut taxes, cut spending, cut regulation. In accordance with conventional media wisdom, the Wall Street Journal keeps its message nice and simple. And we readers have responded with our hearts as well as our heads. We cheer each time the Journal proposes slashing tax rates, and we recoil when it finds a government program that has not worked. We exult with the Journal over every grain of rice in China converted to private ownership, and we mourn with it every time an American acorn is claimed by the state. We've even learned to scorn with it anyone who thinks of the yawning budget deficit as a matter of real concern. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
