Abstract

AbstractVarious mixtures of ricinoleyl alcohol and 12‐hydroxystearyl alcohol (themselves prepared by sodium reduction of castor oil esters), and three hydrogenolysis products of castor oil mixed acids, were sulphated and neutralised. One hydrogenolysis product was also further upgraded both by distillation and by removal of saponifiable matter and the products sulphated. Surfactant testing showed that a) loss of unsaturation reduces wetting and detersive ability, with lesser effects on other properties, b) total hydrogenolysis products are poorer surfactants than ricinoleyl disulphate, and retention of unsaturation and removal of saponifiable products greatly improve the performance.
