Abstract

Root exudates serve as a substrate for methanogens. Breeding efforts aimed at maximizing rice photosynthate allocation to grains may reduce methane emissions and increase yields. Kwon et al. report that a loss-of-function rice allele, GS3, mitigates methane emissions and increases yield by allocating more photosynthates to grains rather than roots.
