Abstract

We are developing the numerical model called the RIAM-COMPACT (Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University, Computational Prediction of Airflow over Complex Terrain). The object domain of this numerical model is from several m to several km, and can predict the airflow and the gas diffusion over complex terrain with high precision. Using the RIAM-COMPACT, the performance of two kinds of 64-bit microprocessors was evaluated under the same conditions. The calculation of neutral airflow past a steep isolated-hill was made in the present study. The target computers were a SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processor, 2 and 4CPU) based on the Intel Itanium2 processor and the AMP Opteron processor. The parallel computing using the automatic parallelization option was performed. The obtained elapsed time was compared with a 1PE of VPP5000 of FUJITSU which is a vector type computer. Consequently, it is shown that the SMP (2, 4CPU) based on the Intel Itanium2 processor and the AMP Opteron processor has about the same performance as a 1PE of VPP5000.
