Abstract

This paper contains the description of a new species, Rhizoclonium fractiflexum, which has been found among tufts of the algae Pithophora roettleri (Roth) Wittr. and Cladophora aegagrophila (L.) Rabenh. in freshwater aquaria in Czech Republic. The species is characterized by frequent and marked bending of filaments in the place of insertion of lateral rhizoids and rhizoidal branches, by frequent occurrence of rhizoids and by sporadic occurrence of ephemeral vegetative branches. It differs from other species also in ecology and the way of reproduction. The distinction of the genus Cladophora Kütz. from the genus RhizocloniumKütz. is discussed.
