Abstract

Abstract The rhizocephalan fauna of the Faroe lsiands is evaluated in the light of the BIOFAR program. The BIOFAR material includes six species of Rhizocephala of which the five are new to Faroese waters: Lemaeodiscus ingolfi, Peltogaster paguri, Sylon hippolytes, Tortugaster boschmai and Triangulus galatheae. The number of rhizocephalan species in the area is raised from two to seven and a gap in the knowledge of their North Atlantic distribution is filled. The vertical distribution of Clistosaccus paguri and P. paguri is revised. An abnormally positioned S. hippolytes is documented for the first time. Also new to the Faroe islands is the hyperparasite of P. paguri: Liriopsis (Crustacea, Isopoda).
