Abstract

Rhinitis and sinusitis are common disorders that afflict a large portion of children. Both the pediatrician and the allergist frequently encounter these diseases. The term rhinosinusitis is more exact than sinusitis as rhinitis frequently precedes and complicates sinusitis. It has been estipated that rhinitis affects as much as 10% of school-age children and 21% to 30% of ad0lescents.5~ The precise incidence of sinus disease in children is unknown. Some investigators have suggested that as many as 5% of upper respiratory tract infections in children are complicated by acute sinusitis.21 Based on the assumption that prolonged upper respiratory tract infection symptoms equate to sinusitis, other researchers suggest that as much as 6% to 13% of children in various child care situations may experience sinusitis in the first 3 years of life.76 The diagnosis and management of rhinitis and sinusitis in children is reviewed in this article.
