Abstract

Examining Bishop John J. Myers’ pastoral discourse advances understanding of dilemmas as rhetorical response to dissent. Dilemmas offer multiple problematic choices and are relevant to the dialectical tensions in religious discourse. Myers exploits dilemmas by presenting authoritative arguments which challenge dissenting Catholics to examine their faith commitments to Church identity and practices. The dilemma structures Myers uses, though generally acceptable to many Catholics, may result in alienating, rather than gathering, dissenting members.
