Abstract
Summary In the first part, entitled “Classical Rhetoric”, the factors or modes (ethos, pathos and logos), the genres (judicial, deliberative and demonstrative) and the stages (inventio, disposino, elocutio, memoria and pronuntiatio) are briefly explained with, at the end, special attention devoted to disposition. The second part, under the heading “The New Rhetoric”, first presents five authors for their merits regarding rhetorical criticism in the N.T. field: H.D. Betz, W. Wuellner, B. Standaert, G.A. Kennedy and K. Berger. Then, the innovation of the new understanding of rhetoric is dealt with as far as genres, language, documents and, more specifically, persuasion and social context are concerned. The “Evaluation” forms the third part. The following critical questions are asked: Is rhetoric a neutral instrument? In how far is it applicable to N.T. texts which to a certain extent may be sub-literary documents? Is language adequately appraised? Can rhetorical criticism constitute the main exegetical meth...
